Tutorial Tuesday: (Fake) Leather Feather Earrings

November 3, 2009

Have I mentioned that I love SCRAP? Short for “Scroungers’ Center for Reusable Art Parts,” it’s a warehouse in San Francisco full of super cheap art supplies of all sorts. It’s got fabric, zippers, yarn, trim, paper, and all sorts of random things you never know you need until you see them. The catch is that you can’t go looking for something very specific, because you probably won’t find it. A couple of years ago I got a bag full of fake and real leather samples and I’ve been slowly using them for various projects. For this week’s Tutorial Tuesday I decided to use some fake purple leather to make simple feather earrings. Don’t have any faux leather scraps? You could also use real leather or even possibly thin felt.

Materials:
Real or fake leather scraps
Jump rings (4)
Earring hooks
Scissors
Pliers
Pen
Pin

Methods:

1. Draw a feather template and trace it onto the back of your fake leather scraps twice.

2. Cut out the feather shapes.

3. Cut fringe into your feather shapes.

4. Now go back and cut out slices of the fringe to define the feather, as shown.

5. Make a hole near the top of your feather with a large pin. I had to widen my hole a bit using the end of a seam-ripper, too.

6. Use the pliers to shove a jump ring in the hole you just made, and attach another to that one. Attach an earring hook to the top jump ring.

Dahbestevamonica: I got my material from SCRAP. It’s actually leftover fabric samples from a furniture store. But you can often find leather scraps at fabric stores, or online.
