Happy Cyber Monday!

November 30, 2009

After a 16-hour, nearly 1000-mile drive all the way from San Francisco to the Arizona/Mexico border (and back!), I’ve returned home and am ready to get back to blogging. My grandmother’s internet was non-existent so I spent the time reading, putting together 1000-piece jigsaw puzzles, arguing with family, playing Pictionary and Jenga, visiting the Titan missile museum and the tiny town of Tubac, Arizona, and working on a few craft projects.

With the help of my brother and one of my sisters I managed to finally complete a ridiculous rug-hooking project that I must have started over 15 years ago. There was a long period of my childhood when I was obsessed with unicorns, and it was during this time that someone (probably my grandma) bought me a unicorn rug-hooking kit. Last time I was home at my parents’ house in Oregon I rediscovered this beauty in the back of a closet, only about 1/4 completed. I knew then that I must finish what I had started, so I hauled it back to San Francisco with me and have been slowly working on it ever since. Recently I ran into a roadblock when I discovered that I was about to run out of orange yarn, but I managed to find a fairly good color match in a ball of orange acrylic from a nearby Michael’s. In the last couple of rows I was a few pieces short of yellow yarn, too, but at that point I just modified the pattern a little. With no further ado, I present to you the Gay Pride Unicorn:

It is currently in the window facing out to the street to let everyone know that we love gay unicorns. I’m not sure if it will ultimately stay there or whether I’ll make it into a wall-hanging or pillow. Any votes?

Oh my gawwd…that is AMAZING. I’d do a pillow, but then again I have quite a weakness for colorful yarnish/needlepoint pillows.

Hah, thank you! I should probably also mention that it’s about 2.5 feet tall by 2 feet wide, so this sucker would make a large pillow. More to love, though.
