Discoveries

May 23, 2011

This weekend Steven and I went wandering around Davis Square, looking for a way to pass the time before his tattoo appointment in the afternoon. We were there because we had decided to check out Cambridge Open Studios in the hopes of seeing cool art, but we had quickly realized that it was nothing like the open studios in San Francisco or Portland. Those were crowded and bustling and most took place in big studios with several artists, whereas these were mostly seemingly in peoples’ homes, with just a few artists and pretty bad art. So we tried to get a bite to eat instead of looking at art, but everywhere was super crowded and we couldn’t make sense of it until we realized that it was probably graduation day at one of the many local colleges. After we gave up and had a snack at the only place we could find a seat, Starbucks, I got Steven to take some outfit photos for me.

On the way home we happened to pass a sign for a flea market in a big abandoned-looking VFW hall, and since we had nothing better to do, I suggested we check it out. I think we both had pretty low expectations, but were really pleasantly surprised when we stepped into the Top Shelf Flea Market to find tons of great vintage clothes and accessories. Turns out it’s a twice yearly event, and we just happened to get lucky with our timing.

I found this lovely strapless BCBG dress, new with tags, for only $30. Yes, this is a classy picture of me trying it on in the changing rooms, aka bathroom.

I think that the fact that I wasn’t expecting it made me appreciate the flea market even more than I otherwise would have. Hooray for unexpected treasures–hope you found some this weekend!
