I’ve long had a fascination with items of clothing printed with stars and galaxies, and earlier this year my desire for such an item flared up again. This was most likely due to the influence of Christopher Kane, who put out many nebula-print items in his Resort 2011 collection. You can see a couple of his pieces in my set above, and the rest on style.com. Although if someone gave me one, I would happily wear a Christopher Kane nebula-print dress, I had in mind something a little more subtle for myself. I decided I wanted a silk scarf printed with galaxies, but couldn’t find one. So I decided to make my own. I had silk fabric custom printed with Hubble telescope images, and the scarves turned out so lovely that I decided to start a new Etsy shop to sell them.

The scarves are available in my new shop, Pillars of Creation. The name refers to pillars of gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula in a photograph taken in 1995. They were destroyed 6000 years ago by a shockwave from a supernova, but we won’t be able to see the change for another millennium! The universe is a crazy place. (You can read more about them here.)

For now I have three different designs, two square and one long rectangle. I hand-hem them myself, and the habotai silk has a gorgeous sheen and drape.

These are so beautiful! Will you continue making these? I am trying to decide if I need to snap one up or if I can put one on my birthday list and wait until after my birthday …

Theresa, thank you! I am planning to continue making them, but depending on demand there might be a bit of lag in the supply because the fabric printing takes awhile. But if the one you want isn’t listed when you want it, just get in touch on here or on Etsy and I’ll be happy to create a listing for you :-)
